Jan. 12 Thomas Hampson Master Class @ CU Boulder

Now, see, this is when having a full-time job is unfair. Thomas Hampson, a huge star in the opera world, is in town this week to perform "Das Lied von der Erde" at Colorado MahlerFest. Tomorrow afternoon he will give a master class at CU Boulder that is free and open to the public. While I don't think he will be anywhere near as scathing as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally's Master Class, I for one would already be throwing up from terror if I knew I would be singing for him. But I would absolutely adore the opportunity to hear him coach others -- they don't call 'em "master classes" for nuthin'.

Title:Master Class - Thomas Hampson, baritone
Time:January 12, 1:00 PM
Location:Imig Music Building - Grusin Music Hall
Event Type:Master Class

Jan. 10 The Pillowman at DCTC

Tomorrow night is the first free performance of 2007 being offered by the Denver Center Theatre Company. These free performances must be a given production's final dress rehearsal, as they are always scheduled for the night before the first preview performance. It's a great way for the cast and crew to work out a few more kinks before the paying audiences (and critics) start showing up, so while a free performance may not be quite as tight or insightful as it will be later in its run, it's a win-win for everyone involved. I can't make it to tomorrow's performance due to work constraints, as the box office opens at 4:30 and the line starts forming early.

The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh Jan 10, 2007 · 6:30pm · Ricketson Theatre

A writer is questioned about the chilling similarities between the crimes in his stories and a series of gruesome real-life murders. The New York Times called Martin McDonagh’s award-winning new work “the season’s most exciting and original new play.” Both viciously funny and disturbingly gruesome, The Pillowman takes on some of today’s most potent issues – from censorship and the power of the state to freedom of speech and the rights of the individual.

Jan. 10 World Music Series in Broomfield

This is up near my neck of the woods, in an area I consider to be pretty... how do I put this... white. Very, very white overall. So it's nice to have the opportunity to hear some world/folk music so close to home. This month's free concert is at 7:00 on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

January 10: Brenda Romero and Friends, “New Mexican Folk Music”Join Brenda M. Romero, Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology and Chair of Musicology at CU-Boulder, and guests for an evening of pantomimed Matachines music and dance, and other New Mexican folk music genres that reflect Spanish and Indian origins including the older folk music of New Mexico and southern Colorado.
